Dunbar Golf Club

Dunbar Golf Club is located approximately thirty miles from Edinburgh, at the eastern end of Scotland's Golf Coast, and sits slightly to the east of Dunbar town centre. The course runs along a narrow strip of true links land which hugs the North Sea, on the East Lothian coastline. Dunbar Golf Club offers play at a truly historic course and is an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue. It presents stunning views and an enjoyable challenge. At Dunbar, the game is played on links land that sits within yards of rocky shores, where the waves often come crashing in. Dunbar Golf Club offers an excellent links golf test set over eighteen holes and, after a game, a warm welcome in their friendly clubhouse. The club's practice facilities are open to visitors.

History: There are almost four hundred years of documented golfing history at Dunbar. Only a handful of other Scottish golfing locations can document the game's existence in their area to as far back. One of the earliest golf references highlights “gouffers” (golfers) breaking the Sabbath laws and being reprimanded by The Kirk (Church of Scotland) for playing rather than praying. The Dunbar Golfing Society, one of the game's oldest recorded organisations, played on the western side of the town in 1794. While the east links, has now been home to Dunbar Golf Club since its inception in 1856. The first mention of ladies’ golf in the area is noted in 1870, when an organisation was created allowing women to play over twelve holes, on a western part of the links. The Dunbar Ladies Golf Club was not instituted until 1894, but its association to the earlier organisation has led some to suggest that it could be the world’s third oldest ladies golf club on record. The course at Dunbar has been laid out some five times, in its history, to achieve its current form. With a fifteen hole course being its first iteration. During the early 1920s, famous golfers James Braid (five times Open champion) and Ben Sayers of North Berwick laid out the course as it is largely played today, lengthening it to 6,425 yards. And finally, in 2008 the course was further extended to its current length of 6,597 yards.

Dunbar Golf Club is a truly historic golfing venue. Hugging the coastline tightly and exposed to the elements, the course offers a true test of links golf. Dunbar Golf Club has hosted Final Qualifying for the Open Championship, when the Open was played at Muirfield. This was so successful that it has been re-selected for the honour on several more occasions. The Scottish Amateur Championship and the British Ladies Amateur Championship have also been played at Dunbar. The course has a wonderful reputation and is a must play venue for any Scottish golf holiday. Dunbar Golf Club is home to an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 72 (women), course. It has tees ranging from 5,696 to 6,597 yards.

SGB Signature Hole: Name: Mill Stone Den. Number: Hole 14. Measuring 404 yards (W) and 432 yards (M) from the tee, this par 4 presents a stunning view back down to the old boathouse, with Bass Rock looming large on the horizon. A challenging dogleg, longer hitters can try and cut the corner, but a tee shot up the right side of the fairway, avoiding the bunkers, gives you a good look at this difficult right to left sloping green, situated perilously close to the beach and sea. Make sure you take enough club to reach the green, if playing into the prevailing wind.
