Nairn Dunbar Golf Club

Nairn

Situated in the town of Nairn, on the stunning Moray Firth, and only a twenty-five minute drive from the city of Inverness, the capital of The Highlands, Nairn Dunbar Golf Club is home to a championship links course. Established in 1899, this historic course has played host to a number of high profile events, including the PGA Northern Open and the R&A Boys Amateur Championship. Over recent years, the green-keeping team have worked tirelessly to maintain and enhance the links character of the course, while undertaking a variety of projects improving habitat for wildlife and natural grasses across the course, leading to the venue winning an Environmental Golf Course of the Year award. With narrow fairways, deep rivetted bunkers and firm, fast running turf, the links at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club is a tough yet fair and highly enjoyable test of golf. Offering visitors a friendly, warm and welcoming invite into their fantastic clubhouse and full access to their practice facilities, the team and members at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club will ensure you enjoy full Highland Hospitality on your Scottish Golf Break.

History: Nairn Dunbar Golf Club was founded in 1899 after Sir Alexander Dunbar of Boath made some 60 acres of land available for the construction of a nine hole course. It was Sir Alexander’s mother, Lady Dunbar, who declared the course open and called on her son to strike the first drive. It took another twenty-five years and a World War before the club was able to extend the course to eighteen holes after acquiring additional land from the Town Council and landowners Brodie of Brodie and Dunbar of Boath.

The original clubhouse underwent two extensions – in 1962 and again in 1976 – in an effort to keep up with the demands of an increasing membership and visiting players. However, as the club neared its centenary, it became clear that despite improvements to the clubhouse and course, some major redevelopment was required. Three new holes were constructed at the east end of the course towards Culbin Forrest. These were open for play in 1994, becoming the 9th, 10th and 11th, with the three holes on “the Hill”, taken out of use. This land was sold to a housing developer, helping to fund the construction of a new £1 million-plus clubhouse which was opened in 1997.

The club has played host to numerous high profile events throughout its history, including the PGA Northern Open and the R&A Boys Amateur Championship and is now at the forefront of promoting golf course environmentalism, by actively pursuing schemes to improve bio-diversity and habitat over the land on which it is custodian.

Championship Course:  The Championship Links at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club is a tough but immensely enjoyable test of golf, where accuracy is rewarded. With narrow fairways, deep rivetted bunkers and firm, fast running turf it requires thoughtful golf, and with two par 5s amongst the final three holes concentration is required right until the end of a round. Having played host to numerous high profile events over the years, Nairn Dunbar is a quality venue. The course's layout, the way it plays and the warm welcome you'll receive from its staff and membership as a visiting golfer ensures that it is a must play venue during a Scottish Golf Break in The Highlands. The Championship Links at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club is an eighteen hole, par 72 (men) and par 74 (women), course. It has tees ranging from 5,467 to 6,691 yards. Golf Scotland. Golf The Highlands.

SGB Signature Hole: Name: Westward Ho!. Number: Hole 10. Measuring 310 yards (W) and 424 yards (M) from the tee this demanding par 4 (M) & (W), right-to-left dog leg, is our favourite hole on the Championship Links at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club. The sensible plan for the tee shot is to aim the drive right of the bunker, and towards the right corner of the fairway, avoiding the attractive stone-walled stream that comes into play, along the left hand side of the hole, just before the hole turns in that direction. The approach shot is towards a long, narrow slightly raised green which has a fall off on all sides. A ball missing the green to the left is in danger of finding the stream at the bottom of a steep slope, a few yards from the putting surface. Westward Ho! At SGB, we love it so.

Practice facilities: Complimentary use of practice facilities are available to visitors, prior to their tee time. Facilities include, a driving range (no balls supplied) and a practice putting green, with surrounding bunkers and short game area. Golf lessons are available at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.

Clubhouse: The modern clubhouse at Nairn Dunbar lies at the heart of the 'friendly club' ethos fostered by the golf club. The main lounge provides a relaxing area to anticipate the round ahead or reflect on the highlights and challenges of the completed round. The dining area overlooks the 18th green and provides the ideal location to enjoy lunch or dinner (see food and dining section). There is also an outdoor seating area for those sunny days. Locker rooms and showers are located on the lower level of the clubhouse, where members and visitors have their own dedicated changing and locker areas. The professional shop stocks a wide range of golfing apparel and equipment, and offers tailored club fitting. Golf and specialist putting lessons are available at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club. Caddie services, buggy, club and trolly hire options are all available at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club too.
