History: Falkirk Golf Club was established in 1922. Known locally as Carmuirs, the club invited James Braid to survey the club’s 18-hole layout just five years after its inauguration. According to the book, 'James Braid and his Four Hundred Golf Courses', by John F. Moreton & Iain Cumming, "Braid was not radical, suggesting alterations to some tees and greens, but providing a full bunkering scheme." According to the book, all of Braid's recommendations were implemented.
The course sits on a 118 acre site, and is located on land that once formed part of the Callendar Estate, previously owned by the Forbes family. In 1994, the course was purchased by the club from the Callendar Trust. In the subsequent years after the buyout, the course at Falkirk Golf Club has been extensively worked upon, brilliantly maintained, and subject to continual improvement, thus ensuring that it is one of the best parkland courses in Central Scotland.
The Golf Course: Offering real variety and a test for any level of golfer 'Carmuirs' is a course where concentration and craft are required to shoot a good score. With beautifully manicured fairways and smooth running greens, a number of elevation changes, and the re-occurrence of a ditch throughout a round, the course has rightly earned its reputation as one of the best in Central Scotland. With tough opening and closing holes, played on tight tree-lined fairways, a number of excellent par 3s, and a variety of cleverly laid out par 4s, the course also enjoys a wonderful setting, with a backdrop including views of The Falkirk Wheel and the Ochil Hills. Playing a round at Carmuirs from the front tees will give great pleasure to higher handicap golfers, but for lower handicappers, if it's an enjoyable yet tough challenge you're after, the regular tees will provide you with just such a test. Falkirk Golf Club hosts an eighteen hole, par 70/72 (men), par 69/72 (women), course. It has tees ranging from 5,559 to 6,327 yards.
SGB Signature Hole: Name: Canal Wheel. Number: Hole 10. Measuring 367 yards (M) and 307 yards (W) this fantastic par 4 is played towards the iconic Falkirk Wheel, a huge rotating boat lift that connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, and a dramatic landmark that forms a terrific backdrop to the hole. A good tee shot is required to ensure you carry the gully and open ditch, to reach the fairway beyond. Alignment for the approach shot should be to the left of the pin as the ground and green slopes from left to right. Bunkers to the left and right guard the green. Once safely onboard, the slope of the green ensures a two putt finish is not inevitable. Concentrate, and enjoy the view after achieving par. A great golf hole, with an amazing landmark backdrop.
