Leven Links

Conveniently located in the town of Leven, in Fife, and nestled on the scenic coastline at Largo Bay, around ten miles south of St Andrews, Leven Links stands as a testament to the timeless allure of golf. A traditional links with rolling fairways, many of which are lined by ancient sand dunes, fast putting surfaces, burns and pot bunkers, Leven Links seamlessly merges natural beauty with golfing excellence. This six time Open Championship final qualifying venue, in part, plays over one of the oldest pieces of golfing ground in the world and hosts two clubs and clubhouses. With an open and warm welcome guaranteed to visitors at both clubhouses, and with fantastic practice facilities on offer, Leven Links is a fabulous venue to play at while enjoying a Scottish Golf Break. History: Situated along the picturesque Firth of Forth coastline in Scotland, golf has been played in the town of Leven, on the now defunct Dubbieside links, since circa 1820. However, the game dates back to 1846 on parts of Leven links. The course's origins at Leven Links trace back to the ingenious vision of local golf enthusiasts who transformed this land into a golfing gem. For a time only nine holes were in being, and all were maintained by local golfers and their families (a paid Keeper of the Green did not appear at Leven until 1876). Leven Links expanded to an eighteen hole configuration in 1868. The extension was brought about by crossing the Mile Dyke and continuing to play east in the sandhills of Lundin Mill. The course underwent a re-design in 1909 and this is the area of ground that the present day player uses now, though not strictly in the layout that was originally planned at the time.

Leven Links hosts two clubs, both of which have a rich history. Leven Golfing Society, lays claim to the title of the world’s eleventh oldest club (1820), while Leven Thistle Golf Club (1876), has played over the links continuously since that time and is rightly recognised as one of the strongest playing clubs in Scotland today.

Over the years, Leven Links has hosted many national and international competitions as well as hosting local final qualifying for the Open Championship in 1978, 1984, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005.

Leven Links Golf Course: From the start of a round visiting golfers will be conscious of the fairways running along the valleys between old dunes; it makes for superb definition and a true test of links golf as the slopes and bounces of these natural obstacles come into play throughout the round. The strength of the course lies in its fine variety of quality “links” holes with undulating fairways, revetted bunkers, wonderful approaches and large true running greens that provide a stern test for even the most accomplished putter. With its bumps, hollows, fine bents and fescues, and wispy rough it could be considered as true a links course as you could ever hope to find. As such it is to be relished by all who visit. Leven Links is an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 73 (women), course. It has tees ranging from 5,725 to 6,551 yards.

SGB Signature Hole: Number: Hole 18. Measuring 456 yards (M) and 445 yards (W) this wonderful par 4 can lead to a fantastic score, or can easily wreck your card. One of the finest finishing holes in links golf, two, or possibly three well struck shots, dependant on wind direction and strength, are needed to find the huge green, situated on the other side of a water hazard. The temptation while standing on the tee is to think ahead to the perils of the devilishly wide Scoonie Burn, which winds its way around the front and right side of the green. However, finding the narrow fairway with your drive will maximise your chances of safely navigating what is to come. Once on the green, two good putts may still be required to achieve a par though. A wonderful and thrilling hole to end a round on a fabulous golf course.

Clubhouse & Practice facilities: Leven Links have two fabulous members' golf clubs playing on the course, Leven Thistle Golf Club and Leven Golfing Society, who between them have over 375 years of history to share. Both clubs openly welcome visitors to make use of their changing and shower facilities.
