The professional and friendly staff pride themselves on looking after visitors to the club, ensuring your visit will be a memorable one, and with excellent practice facilities open to guests, The West Lancashire Golf Club is a magnificent venue to play at while enjoying a golf holiday with Scottish Golf Breaks.
History: The West Lancashire Golf Club was founded in 1873 at a meeting attended by seven members of Royal Liverpool Golf Club, who were anxious to expand ‘the Scottish national game’ by bringing it across the River Mersey. As such, the West Lancashire Golf Club is the oldest in the county of Lancashire and the ninth oldest golf club in England. At the outset, both clubs shared the same membership and golfers enjoyed playing rights at both venues. The architect of the first course laid out in 1874 is unknown, but later, Tom Dunn, Harold Hilton and James Braid were all engaged in developing it.
The present course opened in 1961, and was designed and laid out by C. K. Cotton, who lists Royal Lytham & St Annes, Ganton and Blairgowrie among his professional credits. The present clubhouse opened in 1962, and was designed by London architects Tripe & Wakeham as a complete break with the traditional, to be a two storey modern suntrap building with the principal rooms on the first floor featuring a broad terrace along the north side of the building, overlooking the river.
Having celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023, The West Lancashire Golf Club continues to thrive. The club has recently played host to any number of top class competitions. These include Final Qualifying for the 151st and 152nd Opens at Royal Liverpool and Royal Troon respectively, The Rose Ladies Series and the Jacques Léglise Trophy match between Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) and the Continent of Europe, which is annually contested by two teams of the most promising boys, who are under the age of eighteen, from across these geographical areas.
The links at The West Lancashire Golf Club: Known to be one of the most natural and testing links golf courses in England, West Lancashire was designed by C. K. Cotton. It offers the perfect two loops of nine layout, with the 9th and 18th greens placed in front of the clubhouse. Delivering an uncompromising yet fair test of golf, particularly when the wind is blowing, and set upon wonderful links-land with humps and hollows, elevated greens, dunes and an adjacent railway line, the course offers views over the Mersey Estuary and even across to the Welsh Mountains. West Lancashire does not give up a score easily. With clever bunkering, cross winds to contend with and rough that can be penal this is no surprise, but for lovers of seaside golf the ever changing challenge and shot making opportunities at play ensure that even though it’s tough, that it is also a joyous experience. The links at The West Lancashire Golf Club is an eighteen hole, par 71/72 (men), par 72/74 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 5,460 to 7,016 yards.
SGB Signature Hole: Name: Valley. Number: Hole 12. Measuring 176 yards (M) and 134 yards (W) from the tee this par 3 is widely recognised as one of the greats amongst short holes. An intimidating tee shot, often played into the prevailing wind, requires an accurate play aimed to the back left portion of the slightly elevated green. Avoid the two cavernous bunkers at the front right, they may ruin your round and take an extra club as long is always better than short on this brilliant yet tricky hole.

Just outside the clubhouse, situated to the left is a large practice putting green and to the right is a chipping green, with two practice bunkers.
