Gullane is a pretty village sitting along the coast of the Firth of Forth, five miles west of North Berwick and less than twenty miles east of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. Gullane Golf Club is home to three tremendous links courses and boasts two clubhouses. Gullane No. 1 course is set on ancient links-land with smooth-running greens, pot bunkers and wispy grasses. It has been a host venue for the Scottish Open, the Ladies Scottish Open, and Final Qualifying for the Open Championship. Gullane No. 2 course runs alongside No. 1 for the first seven holes before sweeping down to a nature reserve next to Aberlady Bay. The course has also hosted Final Qualifying for the Open Championship. The beauty of the East Lothian coastline and the challenge of the layout on No.2 course create an unforgettable links golf experience. Enjoying some of the best views across Aberlady Bay to the Firth of Forth and Edinburgh beyond, Gullane No. 3 course, although shorter and with smaller greens, is a spectacular and tricky test of links golf. With excellent practice and clubhouse facilities, which are open to visitors, a trip to Gullane Golf Club will ensure a memorable Scottish Golf Break.
History: Golf has been played on Gullane links for more than three hundred and fifty years. During the 17th century weavers from local villages met annually for competition. The first club was not formed, though, until the early 1800s, and due to a lack of interest it disbanded in the late 1840s. The oldest club still in existence playing on Gullane links is the Dirleton Castle Golf Club, which was founded by local shopkeepers and artisans in 1854. Towards the close of the century, in 1882, eight gentlemen of Gullane met to discuss the links and agreed that to keep them in good order, a club should be formed under the name of The Gullane Golf Club. Local golfers were contacted regarding membership, with thirty-two making the first roll of honour. A year later, the membership had reached one hundred and twenty-five.
Established in 1884, Gullane No. 1 is the oldest course by fourteen years. It is renowned for its well-maintained greens, links grasses and extensive bunkering. Gullane No. 2 was laid out by Willie Park Jr in 1898 and is noteworthy due to a series of testing short holes that demand guile and skill. Tasked with creating a test for even the most experienced golfer, with a special emphasis on shot making, Willie Park Jr set out Gullane No. 3 in 1910.
Gullane No. 1: Host venue for the Scottish Open, the Ladies Scottish Open, and Final Qualifying for the Open Championship. Gullane No. 1 course has a fantastic reputation. Played over ancient links-land the course offers golf in its purest form, while the layout and the wind can provide a stern challenge to even the very best golfers. The Gullane No. 1 course is an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 74 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 5,903 to 6,873 yards.
SGB Signature Hole: Queen's Head. Hole 7. Measuring 392 yards (W) and 398 yards (M) from the tee, this par 4 is blessed with one of the best views in golf. Teeing off from the heights of Gullane Hill, with a vista taking in many beautiful courses, the expansive coastline, and Bass Rock, a down-hill drive may seem to travel an enormous distance in the air. Two well placed fairway bunkers guard the approach to the green. These may cause issues for longer hitters, however, if you stay on the fairway the ball will continue rolling and rolling towards the green. For shorter hitters, if you hold the fairway with your drive, the second shot will often be played into the green with a wedge. A truly stunning golf hole.
Gullane No. 2: Although shorter than its older sibling, Gullane No. 2 course provides an equally stern test. The beauty of the East Lothian coastline and the challenge of the layout create an unforgettable links golf experience. Gullane No. 2 course is an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 73 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 5,566 to 6,396 yards.
Gullane No. 3: Enjoying some of the best views across Aberlady Bay, this is a course that demands a deft touch and a cool head. Forget the modest yardage; Gullane No. 3 course is laid out for straight hitting shot-makers. It is an eighteen hole, par 67 (men), par 68 (women), track. Gullane No. 3 course has tees ranging from 4,793 to 5,134 yards. It may be short, but with sloping greens and numerous bunkers to be avoided, it offers a true links challenge of strategic course management, all played out in stunning scenery.
