Royal Troon

Royal Troon, host of ten Opens so far... Play one of the toughest links courses on The Open rota with Scottish Golf Breaks.

Royal Troon’s Old Course was founded in 1878 as a 12-hole course, and then expanded to 18 holes a decade later. It was subsequently re-designed by five-time Champion Golfer James Braid ahead of its first Open in 1923. Royal Troon hosted its 10th Open in 2024 and is renowned as one of the world's greatest links courses.

Royal Troon last staged The Open Championship in 2024, with Zander Schauffele producing a magnificent final round of sixty-five to take the Claret Jug. Schauffele played superbly over the four days, managing the elements and the course expertly over the first three days, in sometimes trying conditions, particularly on the Saturday, before producing his final round masterclass. Schauffele shot a collective score of nine under par to hold off Billy Horschel and Justin Rose by two shots. Special mention should be made of Justin Rose, who finished joint second, after having to play at a qualification event held at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club to gain a spot at The Open.

The Old Course: Designed in a traditional out-and-back layout, The Old Course, where The Open is played, begins gently and is set within some of the most striking links land to be found at any of The Open venues, and concludes with a back nine as tough as any finish in the world. One of Scotland's greatest links courses provides a challenging test of golfing ability. As with all links courses, there is an ever-present wind to contend with, and deep rough interspersed with gorse and broom. It is essential to be precise and accurate when making your shots. The prevailing wind may lull you into a false sense of security on the front nine, however, it may come back to haunt you on the back nine as its North-Westerly direction can make the inward journey extremely difficult. The Old Course is an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 75 (women) track. It has tees ranging from 6,108 to 7,385 yards.

The Portland Course: The Portland Course is shorter and a little more sheltered than The Old Course. However, it still presents a stern and thoroughly enjoyable test. The course opened in 1895, and was designed by William Fernie, a former Troon professional and winner of The Open in 1883. The Portland was subsequently redesigned by Dr Alister MacKenzie in the early 1920s and Interestingly, hosts five Par 3s and five par 5s within its layout. Four of the par 5s come on the back nine. The Portland Course is an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 75 (women), track. The course has tees ranging from 5,818 to 6,289 yards.

SGB Signature Hole: Name: Postage Stamp. Number: Hole 8. Measuring 123 yards (M) and 118 yards (W). The shortest, but by no means easiest hole in Open Championship golf, this iconic par 3 should be as easy as one-two-three. However, standing on the tee atop an Ayrshire dune, looking over the scrubland towards the the pear-shaped green in the near distance, with the 'Coffin' and another four bunkers eagerly awaiting any misplaced shots, is it any wonder that even the world's best golfers become a little dry mouthed at the thought. Can you hold your nerve on the tee and lick the famous 'Postage Stamp'?
