Monifieth Golf Links

Monifieth Golf Links is located in the Angus region of Scotland, within the small coastal town of Monifieth, on the north shore of the Firth of Tay. The town is situated within thirty minutes travelling time of St Andrews, twenty minutes from Dundee Airport and within two hours of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen Airports. Home to three golf clubs, and two fantastic links courses, one of which, The Medal course, is used as a Final Qualifying venue when The Open Championship is played at nearby Carnoustie, Monifieth Golf Links offers a tough and uncompromising test of golf on highly enjoyable and challenging inland links courses. With a warm welcome guaranteed for visitors at the Links Golf Centre, and the clubhouses of both The Monifieth Golf Club and Grange & Broughty Golf Club, and excellent practice facilities on offer, Monifieth Golf Links is a fabulous venue to play at while enjoying a Scottish Golf Break. History: Golf has been played at Monifieth since at least 1639. The parish records show a local citizen being officially admonished for playing golf before noon on a Sunday, when they should have been in church. By 1649 church law had decreed that golf was not to be played at all on the Sabbath. The first signs of a formally designed course at Monifieth came in 1845 when Allan Robertson of St. Andrews, the greatest player of his day and the world’s first professional golfer, laid out a nine-hole course, on land leased from the Earl of Panmure. Founded in 1845, Panmure Golf Club was the first club to play at Monifieth. A group of artisans from the local foundry formed The Monifieth Golf Club, in 1858, and they were awarded playing rights on the course. The course was then extended to eighteen holes in 1880 and by the 1880s four clubs had playing rights on the course. In 1898, Panmure Golf Club moved to new course at Barry. The Panmure members who wished to stay at Monifieth subsequently formed the Grange Club. By 1912, Land was bought to lay out a new nine hole course called the Ashludie. The design for this course was signed off by James Braid. The Ashludie Course was later extended to eighteen holes in 1930.

In the modern era, Monifieth Golf Links has played host to numerous prestigious and high profile events including Open Qualifying, the Scottish Amateur Strokeplay, the Scottish Amateur Championship, the British Girls Amateur, the British Seniors Qualifying, the Scottish Boys, the Scottish Girls, the Scottish Ladies Championship, the R&A Junior Open, and the R&A Boys Amateur.

Tom Watson played his first ever round of links golf at Monifieth, when visiting the venue during early July, 1975, in search of a round before The Open, which was being held at nearby Carnoustie. Watson subsequently won The Open on his debut, and thirty-six years later was awarded an honorary life membership at Monifieth Golf Links at a ceremony, where the five times Open champion re-enacted his first ever drive on a links course and helped the Monifieth Links Chairman to embed a special plaque in the first tee to commemorate his golfing achievements.

The Medal: An enjoyable and challenging championship inland links course, set on undulating terrain, where out of bounds, fast running fairways, strategically placed pot bunkers, penal rough, large and well protected greens, and weather conditions all play their part in a round. The Medal course initially runs alongside the Aberdeen to London railway line, and out of bounds on the right is a constant threat over the opening stretch. Unlike many links courses, there are limited sea views, and the course is tree lined, however, with a multitude of excellent holes on both the front and back nine to fully hold your attention, the distraction of a sea view is not required. While the final four holes on The Medal offer a wonderful test. From the 15th, a stunning par 4, to the slight dog-leg par 5 on the 18th, opportunities to post a good score, or wreck your card abound in equal measure. The Medal course at Monifieth Golf Links is an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 73 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 5,972 to 6,655 yards.

SGB Signature Hole: Name: North Buddon. Number: Hole 7. Measuring 417 yards (M) and 362 yards (W) from the tee this beautiful looking par 4 opens with a testing drive, which must carry a burn, and avoid it again on landing as it meanders its way up the left hand side of the hole. With a mid to long iron required to play through the shallow dunes, towards a narrowing fairway at the entry to the green, a cleverly situated bunker short and right, and another front left await any misplaced second shots. A tough and testing hole on a tough and uncompromising course.

The Ashludie: Playing at around 1500 yards shorter than The Medal course, with smaller greens and with some truly outstanding short par 4s, The Ashludie offers tremendous fun and a test of imaginative links golf shot making. It is an ideal choice, if you would like to enjoy a second round of the day at this venue, or if you would prefer a less time consuming round. However, it is highly enjoyable in its own right too. The Ashludie course at Monifieth Golf Links is an eighteen hole, par 68 (men), par 69 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 4,803 to 5,123 yards.

Clubhouse & Practice facilities: With three clubs playing on Monifieth Golf Links, visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to accessing quality facilities. On site, there is a chipping and putting area, and warm up nets right by the first tee of the Medal Course, and a further practice putting area by the first tee of the Ashludie course. In addition, a large practice area is located just a few minutes drive away. A staff member will be happy to direct visitors to this facility.
